Since his arrest last month, many tales have surfaced about the notorious Sinaloa cartel leader. The most commonly told, though, may be a tall one.

View this image ›

The Associated Press

Until he was captured on Feb. 22, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, was the world’s most wanted drug trafficker, presiding for 13 years over the largest organized crime syndicate in the Americas. He is a legend in Mexico, a symbol of the violence of the cartel wars, the wealth of the drug trade, and the impunity of crime in Mexico.

Many news stories about his bloodless capture and incarceration inevitably include mention of his celebrated 2001 escape from Mexico’s Puente Grande maximum security prison in a laundry cart. The yarn has become emblematic of Guzman’s ingenuity and boldness. Never mind that it almost certainly never happened.

The tale first emerged from one of El Chapo’s loyal henchmen during the worst of the public fallout right after the escape. He turned himself in and confessed to a judge that he trundled the drug lord out of prison in a laundry cart. His story implicated the lowest-ranking staff in the prison, and was endorsed by the administration of the new president and repeated again and again by the television networks. But investigative journalist Anabel Hernandez exhaustively debunked the tale in her book Narcoland. Guzman, after all, was locked up in a supermax prison equipped with heat and motion sensors so sensitive that a creature as small as a cat hidden in a laundry cart would have set off the alarms. A grown man hiding under a pile of bedsheets did not stand a chance. Security cameras and hidden microphones, mounted throughout the prison and monitored 24 hours a day by the federal spy agency from a control room, show Guzman entering the sick bay of the prison around the time he was supposedly being trundled out of the prison. Surely some expert in the design of the prison could have put the laundry cart fable to bed in short order, as a point of professional pride. But alas, the two foremost experts on the design of Puente Grande were shot and killed in the two months before Guzman’s escape. And why let the truth get in the way of a good story?

View this image ›

Guzman is escorted by soldiers during a presentation at the Navy’s airstrip in Mexico City on Feb. 22. Henry Romero / Reuters

The story of Guzman’s escape, as recounted by Hernandez, is not a prison caper but a political thriller. It is All the President’s Men and the whispered warning from Deep Throat (“The list of the people involved is longer than anyone can imagine”). Start with the housecleaning of the federal prisons bureau at the eleventh hour of an outgoing presidential administration: The new directors of the prison system appointed a new warden who, in turn, hired new commanders. Whistle-blowers on the prison staff reported that under the new leadership, the Sinaloa Cartel capos were given the run of the prison and anything goes: cocaine, liquor, prostitutes, Viagra, live music, restaurant food. The guards took money and the narcos used them like valets. On the afternoon of Guzman’s escape, he met in his cell with three of the prison’s commanders and the prison doctor. A tall sheet of plywood was installed that blocked any view to the inside of his cell from the security cameras. Guzman was last seen on prison video footage just before lights-out, milling about near the prison sick bay with two bodyguards. At 11 p.m., the warden received a report that the drug lord was not in his cell. At 1 a.m., the deputy secretary was notified. At 7 a.m., a SWAT unit of federal police stormed the prison, displaced prison guards from the entrances and exits, and ordered all monitors to evacuate the control room.

The SWAT officers assigned to the medical area found El Chapo and handed him a uniform, balaclava, and riot helmet. When the alert was lifted and the commando unit withdrew from the prison, Guzman absconded with them, without need for any laundry cart.

Some of the public officials most under suspicion of colluding with El Chapo have gone on record that he had help from the prison administration. But to argue that the biggest prison break in Mexican history boils down to one man’s derring-do and a number of prison guards paid to look the other way sounds too incredible to be true, and for good reason.

Warning: There are major Kingsman: The Secret Service spoilers ahead, but if you havent seen the 2015 movie already, I do not pity you, for you are stupid.

Now, fans of the movie already know that Colin Firths character, Harry (aka Galahad), was killed by Samuel L. Jacksons character near the end of the first movie.

It was heartbreaking for viewers because we spent most of the movie falling in love with Harry and Eggsys bond, and they just SHOT HIM IN THE HEAD.

Most of the time, when someone gets shot in the head, theyre, like, objectively dead. But according to Harry himself in the first teaser for the sequel, reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.

Ever since the sequel was announced, fans have been dying to find out if Harry is actually dead or not. Because lets be real itd be really hard to have a Kingsman movie without Harry.

The new trailer opens up with narration from Harry himself speaking directly to Eggsy.

“He manhandled me in rehearsals from the start, pushing me, whacking my stomach, bending my arms roughly. I thought that was just how it went — how dancers worked with each other. But it kept getting worse. One day, Maks was trying to put me in a certain position and hit my stomach so hard with his open palm that I had a red handprint there for the rest of the day.”

Maks is adamant that the allegations are false.

Afolabi Sotunde / Reuters / Reuters

ABUJA, Nigeria — In the end, he just wasn’t sure.

The father from Chibok stood outside the home of his host in Nigeria’s capital, where he has been following the civil society movement and trying, in a city more proximal to power than the village he comes from, to get answers.

His daughter was one of more than 300 kidnapped on April 15 by Boko Haram, an Islamist separatist group, from her secondary school dormitory in Chibok, a village in Nigeria’s unstable northeast. In fact, he lost five daughters that night — his own, and four girls from close family members. In Nigeria, the children who sleep under your roof, whoever bore them, are yours.

He squinted at the photograph on his host’s cell phone. (Names have been withheld for security reasons.) It was a still taken from a video Boko Haram had released Monday morning, claiming to show more than 100 of the 276 girls the group still holds. But it wasn’t clear if the girls in the video were the same girls the group had kidnapped, and the father looked to see if he might recognize his daughter’s friends or classmates. A hundred or more small faces, wrapped tight in gray abayas, stared back at him.

Then he thought the saw his daughter.

His body shook, but his face betrayed little. He stepped inside, and returned with a black plastic bag. Inside was a collection of photographs, and he thumbed through portraits and snapshots to find a passport-style photo of his daughter in her gray-blue school uniform.

He zoomed in on the image from the video, and laid his daughter’s photograph beside it. He stared hard.

But he couldn’t tell. His daughter is a Christian, and he had difficulty deciding if the image of the girl in the video is what his daughter would look like dressed in an abaya.

“I can’t feel that it is her,” he said, his voice crumbling. “But I think — I think it could be.”

It was an earnest, human moment in a day otherwise occupied by revelations from the video, including Boko Haram’s demand to exchange the girls for members being held in Nigerian prisons. In the video, the group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, insisted, “We will never release them until after you release our brethren.”

It was a message that didn’t sit well with the fathers and mothers who’ve been gathering in Abuja every day for nearly two weeks to demand more decisive, coordinated action to rescue the girls.

“As a mother, I would say, trade them. Do whatever you have to do to free those girls,” one rally-goer said. “But as an individual, I worry that it sets a pattern, that it might happen again.”

Human rights activist and lawyer Femi Felana came out even more firmly against the idea. “We are not going to succumb to the intimidation of criminals,” he said. “It is illegal, it is immoral, to use innocent children to bargain with the government of Nigeria. … These girls are not prisoners of war. They were illegally abducted. They are not Nigerian soldiers.”

It was unclear just who might negotiate such a swap, or to whom, exactly, the girls would be released.

To Americans, some cultural traditions practiced in other countries seem odd (as ours do to them). We just didn’t grow up with those traditions, so we have little to no understanding of their origins or why they are so important. This is often the case when people from different cultures are exposed to other people’s customs for the first time.

And this Spanish tradition is certainly one of those strange activities. On the Catholic feast day of Corpus Christi, Spanish mothers bring their newborns into the streets and place them on mattresses so that men can jump over them. It’s a huge celebration, but what does it all mean?

The festival is called El Salto del Colacho, or the Devil’s Jump. To carry out this tradition, mothers first line their babies up on comfy mattresses.

Getty Images

After that, men dressed in elaborate costumes step onto the scene. They’re meant to represent the Devil.

Getty Images

These men jump over the babies. The spiritual significance of this act is that it’s said to cleanse babies of their original sin.

Getty Images

You can watch it all unfold in the video below.

This looks like a ton of fun, but I’m not sure if I’d trust a bunch of strange men jumping over my child. That being said, it’s pretty amazing to get a glimpse of what life is like for other people around the world.

Holder Announces DOJ Plan To Sue North Carolina Over Voter ID Law

Eric Holder, the first African-American to hold the position of attorney general, is preparing to announce his resignation.

Holder has been one of the longest serving members of President Barack Obama’s Cabinet, and the fourth longest serving attorney general in US history.

He was sworn in by Vice President Joe Biden on February 3, 2009. Half a decade later, it seems his historic tenure is over.

According to sources, Holder plans to announce his decision as soon as his successor is confirmed. The leading candidate for the job is apparently Solicitor General Don Verrilli. This process won’t be immediate and could run into 2015.

Evidently, Holder’s decision to resign was not a product of pressure from the White House, but ultimately his own choice. Sources say the White House would’ve been happy to keep him until the end of President Obama’s second term.

A native of New York City, Holder was also the first African-American to be appointed as deputy attorney general by President Bill Clinton.

He’s had a storied career, making huge strides on civil rights issues, particularly. His time as attorney general has not been entirely smooth, however, largely as a consequence of a contentious relationship with republicans in Congress.

Holder has been a voice of reason on issues such as marijuana and the War on Drugs, as well as a champion of same-sex marriage. Moreover, he has fought vigorously against voter suppression, and launched 20 investigations into abuse by local police departments.

Throughout his tenure, Holder has been a fervent advocate for the rights of minorities and there are likely many people out there upset by his decision to step down.

Even though Holder is planning on leaving, he will likely still push on several policy and enforcement initiatives before he walks out the door.

He has not yet signaled what he plans to do after he resigns, but some believe he may return to the corporate law firm Covington and Burling.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and more than 80 of her House colleagues today pushed the Obama administration to put in writing a policy that would help to protect same-sex couples in which one partner is a foreign citizen from being separated because current U.S. law doesn’t recognize their relationship.

The request, the House’s second attempt to move the Obama Administration on the issue, comes after the administration appeared to backtrack this past year on a commitment to include such a policy in its effort to focus the Department of Homeland Security’s resources on high-priority immigration cases.

The administration announced in August 2011 that its focus on the “highest priorities” for immigration enforcement would mean that same-sex couples will be considered a family for the purposes of exercising prosecutorial discretion not to institute deportation proceedings against a foreign partner. Advocates celebrated the move, particularly because many of the foreign partners would otherwise be eligible for a green card because of his or her relationship were it not for the Defense of Marriage Act’s ban on the federal government recognizing such marriages.

Two months later, however, and as today’s letter pointed out, a response from DHS to members of Congress asking about the specifics of the new policy stated only that “LGBT individuals’ ties and contributions to the community are taken into account” — with no mention of the family ties that officials had said would be included in the considerations.

In today’s letter, Pelosi — along with Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Mike Honda, the lead sponsors of two bills aimed at addressing LGBT inequalities in the immigration system, and 81 other Democrats — called on Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to “issue a written field guidance or a memorandum to explicitly state the policy of your August 18, 2011 announcement which would direct DHS personnel to consider LGBT family ties as a positive factor for the exercise of prosecutorial discretion.”

The House members — including out gay Reps. Barney Frank, Jared Polis and David Cicilline — go on to say that “[a] written policy is the best way to ensure that the decision by President Obama and DHS to recognize LGBT family ties for immigration purposes will be implemented so that families will remain together.”

Calling the letter “a true show of congressional force,” Immigration Equality spokesman Steve Ralls told BuzzFeed, “It is a simple action, but also one that will have a real impact on real people and families. We hope Secretary Napolitano will heed the advice of those who signed the letter, and take this important step toward protecting some of the most vulnerable individuals within the immigration system from deportation.”

Lavi Soloway, the founder of Stop the Deportations and a lawyer who has represented many same-sex couples facing separation said he “commend[s] Leader Pelosi and the other members for keeping the administration feet to the fire on this.”

Working on cases involving immigration officials and immigration judges across the country, Soloway explained why he viewed the step sought by Pelosi and the other members of Congress as necessary.

“DHS’ refusal to confirm that the prosecutorial discretion guidelines are meant to keep LGBT families together continues to send mixed messages to deportation officers, Immigration Judges and Immigration and Customs Enforcement prosecutors who have the discretion to protect our families and stop deportations,” he told BuzzFeed. “These mixed messages confuse officers in the field and leave LGBT families without protection.”

It should probably come as little to no surprise Olympic athletes need more calories than you and I in order to fuel up and compete at the highest competitive levels this summer in Rio.

However, after taking a look at exactly what US swimmer Ryan Lochte eats in order to consume 6,000 to 8,000 calories a day, you’re going to be more than a little nauseous.

At the moment, Lochte is crushing the 2016 Summer Olympics, but it appears his domination has a lot to do with the amount of food he’s crushing on the daily.

We’ll get into exactly what the 32-year-old Lochte eats for each meal in a minute, but first, let us take a moment to acknowledge the fact he’s been religiously eating pizza and chicken wings every Friday night since he was 8.

OK, let’s go. BroBible broke down his meals by calories, so you can see exactly how a typical day looks.

-Six eggs (597 calories)
-w/ ham, one slice (46 calories)
-w/spinach, one cup (41 calories)
-w/diced tomatoes, half cup (25 calories)
-Hash browns, one cup (413 calories)
-Pancakes, two (298 calories)
-Oatmeal, one cup (166 calories)
-One banana (105 calories)

TOTAL = 1,691 calories

-Avocado toast
-w/ half an avocado (145 calories)
-w/ whole wheat bread slice (69 calories)
-w/ spinach (12 calories)
-w/ one egg (91 calories)
-w/ hot sauce (1 calorie)
-w/ tofu sausage (120 calories)

TOTAL = 438 calories

-Fettuccine Alfredo (950 calories)
-w/ chicken (282 calories)
-Water with MiO drops (0 calories)

TOTAL = 1,232 calories

-Peanut butter Kind bar (200 calories)

TOTAL = 200 calories

-Domino’s pizza, three plain slices (870 calories)
-Domino’s BBQ wings, four (960 calories)
-w/ blue cheese (240 calories)
-Mountain Dew, 24 ounces (340 calories)

TOTAL = 2,410 calories

-Mint chocolate chip ice cream, one cup (300 calories)

TOTAL = 300 calories

This gives us a grand total of 6,271 calories a day consumed by Ryan Lochte, but after a massive event like the Rio Olympics, Lochte reportedly treats himself to a steak dinner, which gets him over that 8,000-calorie hump.

Speaking on his indulgence, Lochte told Bon Apptit,

I’m going to a steakhouse and I’m getting a big, fat steak. I love filets. Anything, really. The bigger the better. It’s going down one tube, so I’m OKwith that. I’m eating French fries, I love sweet potatoes, cooked vegetables, broccoli.

God bless this man and his seemingly insatiable appetite. Eating this much food every single day should be an Olympic event in and of itself.

You’re a patriot, Ryan Lochte, and this drink is definitely for you.

Here’s to next 8,000 calories, bud.
